lb (pound) Cafe, Chapel St Melbourne

Many many years ago we were those people who got a booking at Flower Drum, and flew from Sydney to Melbourne for a brief 2 night stay with the sole purpose of eating there in its prime. It was amazing. We still to this day talk about the peking duck, quail san choi bow, caramel apples, waiters in their bow ties and of course being lucky enough to tour the kitchen - all those wok burners, oh my! and the smell of the peking ovens in action, just amazing and unforgettable. That was of course many years before our blogging started, so you'll just have to take our word for it!;)

After that amazing dinner, we woke up a little late. We had plans of having breakfast at Pearl, so hitched a tram over that side of town worked out what station to get off and we were there. The place was full of staff, but not a single customer in site. Oh no, was it that awkward in-between-breakfast-and-lunch-time?! We poke our head in the door and a very nice staff member came to greet us. They were booked out for a private function, so there went out brunch plans! He must have seen our dismay, and instructed us the little staff favorite just up the road for awesome coffee and a great breakfast selection. We followed his directions, make a slight detour down Oxford lane and find ourselves at Pound, or Lb as you will see on the widow. All these years back we had a great experience, and on this trip our first morning was to be spent wandering down Chapel St. so Lb for breakfast was a given.

As we are staying at the gorgeous Cullen hotel in Prahan, Lb is closer than we think. Before we can decide whether it's Chap-pel or Sha-pel St we see the familiar glass windows.

We were so in need of our caffeine kick that it was absorbed within seconds of hitting the table. Now, just think of this place as the sort of awesome breakfasts you would like to make at home everyday, but likely won't. The produce is fresh & the combinations classic. Smashed avocado, fresh tomato & goats cheese on toast - yup, that's me!

Kim has a heartier option of chorizo panini with rocket. Oh, the little touches like adding the greens AFTER the panini is toasted - that S*+# is always appreciated!

If you are in Melbourne, or more importantly down the Chapel St end of town, Lb is a perfect morning start or midday break.

Breakfast in Greve

We easily got into a routine while in Tuscany recently ... and each day started with breakfast at Cafe le Logge. A beautifully made cappuccino, of which are churned out from behind the counter at an alarming rate !! and today, a simple yet unbelievably delicious combination of mascarpone, tomato and basil.

Tuscany

This keeps us going until we pass by the bakery ... how could we possibly resist fresh baked pizza bread - a slice of one with ripe, fresh tomato and then a slice of one generously sprinkled with salt & green olives.

Frienze; A tale of four breakfasts: part 4

Starting to feel a little full from our various breakfasting we took a wander around the Mercato Central, taking in all the amazing produce for sale especalliy outside in the fruit and vegatable section.

We had heard of a little place on the corner of the market square where all the market vendors go, only problem was we were still feeling fullish so we gave that one a pass and took a walk down towards the river where il Fratelli is located, Florences oldest panini bar, it's been around since 1875, so that should be enough time to get the art of the panini right.

Firenze

We rock up to the lane where the shop's located and theres a fairly decent line facing into a tiny hole in the wall, must be the place then. The line moves quickly and before we know it we're at the front, there's two guys working in a tiny space whipping out dozens of panini made from the wicked ingredients in the showcase to on side. Decisions decisions ...

Kat ends up with a prosciutto arrosto, crema tartufa (roast proscuito with truffle cream) 3€

I with the salsicca cruda melanzane (fresh sausage and roast eggplant) 2.5€

with these in our hands and another glass of wine (when in Rome people) we picked a spot on the side of the lane and enjoyed our forth pre 12-noon meal of the day.

Bake n Stay, Lamai

Now I love my rice and chilli for breakfast, but even when in Thailand we sometimes just have a craving for some eggs, and a coffee ... maybe even some bread.  We've driven past this little place alot, right at the corner before you turn into Lamai. It's called Bake n Take.

Koh Samui

But this morning we're going to Bake n Stay. I go straight for the French breakfast set. 2 fried eggs, 2 croissant with coffee and a juice. Well, it was okay, it certainly might frighten a Parisian calling it a French breakfast though. The coffee was great, a nice chocolate feathering on the top and a strong caffeine kick. Freshly squeezed Thai orange juice as well, mmmm.

Koh Samui

Kim has a panini with sausage, olive, dried tomato and pesto. The bread's a little unexciting and could do with a touch more toasting, but it's not bad.

Koh Samui

We had both been eyeing off the custard tart sitting in the display cabinet since we arrived. So this makes a fantastic finish. The tart was definitely the highlight. A rich creamy custard with a caramel top encased in a crumbly short pastry.

Koh Samui

Another good start to the day, we're back on the scooter for more exploring of the island.
