Holy mushrooms, breakfast at Kiosko Universal, La Boqueria Barcelona

Holy mushrooms, this lone platter of giant mushrooms on the counter at Kiosko Universal made our decision of breakfast on this morning an easy one.

Barcelona

We'll have those, sautéed, with a few eggs. Oh sure, throw some fried potatoes in there too!

Barcelona

All we need is a few slices of pan con tomate which are sitting on the counter and we are good to go.

Barcelona

Not a bad choice at all for a quick breakfast before taking to the streets, it's on the top end of the boqueria a few blocks over from Pinotxo bar.

La Cueva en Aragon and the single tapa ...

I've started to write and deleted this post a dozen times. Each time I couldn't express how amazed with La Cueva en Aragon. So here it is simple and to the point just like La Cueva. Tiny bar, one chef, one tapa. A hot plate full of grilled champigons, splashed with a garlicky herb oil. One order gets you four mushrooms and a single baby shrimp skewered a top slice of fresh baguette to catch the juices and oil. If you want something else you can have a beer with your order. The freshest products cooked simply are always a winner with us. We weren't the only one's who thought so, understandably La Cueva was packed to the doors every night and after the first night we were there every night as well.

Whipping up breakfast in Barcelona

We were very lucky to have a little apartment in Barcelona with a well equiped kitchen, and even a teeny-tiny little balcony that opened up and looked out onto Las Ramblas. When we arrived, it was coming into Easter weekend ... We were fortunate enough to think that through, and ventured out on Saturday to stock the fridge. What we hauled home you'd think the easter holidays ran for a whole week, and that we were feeding 7 people, but that's beside the point.

We barely make it through the afternoon before we crack into the stash. Chickpeas that are in a rich tomato & herb liquid, pepperdews filled with cheese & some baby chorizos along with a slab of pure honeycomb and an artesian goat's cheese.

BarcelonaBarcelonaBarcelona

Sunday is for sleeping in, as well as big hearty home-cooked breakfasts! We fry a few eggs and place them on some toasted sliced bread, along with some trompet & morel mushrooms which we have simply sauteed in butter and some little fried pork sausages. Oh, what a surprise these were! Tiny little chipolata's that were specked with fresh black truffle. A very decadent breakfast indeed ...

To market, to market.........

My head is spinning, every sense is reeling, I feel like the whole world has exploded into full technicolor life. We've been to markets all over Asia, but standing in the midst of the morning markets in Greve in Chianti, it's just wow. All the things we've only ever seen as dried or preserved goods are all here fresh. Vege stalls over flowing with that morning picked porcini's and chanterelles.

Zuchini flowers by the crate and beautiful artichokes

Saturday markets Saturday markets
Tiny chilli's and roma tomatoes on the vine

How could we not buy some? Or the cheese or the cured meats or the....... well, all of it. This was our first experience of Italian life and we loved it, we were already formatting plans to pack up every thing we own and move it all here, from swinging by the local coffee shop to grab a standing breakfast of espresso and pastry, to walking another few meters across the square to grab freshly baked bread, or buying some prosciutto at the 300 hundred year old family run butchery and mingle with the locals doing their weekly shopping.

Antica Macelleria Falorni
Seriously how could we choose?

After we rounded up a few amazing snacks it was back to the villa to set up a wee lunchie under the Tuscan sun.

Birthday piggin. Samui

Anyway where were we? Oh yeah back in Samui it was our friend Mike's birthday. We decided there could be no better way to celebrate such an occasion than to sacrifice a small animal, and so a plan was formed. We made calls and we found the specialist we were after, satisfied he could deliver further calls were made to inform all of our intentions. And so the day of celebration arrived, we began the morning with a trip to the markets to buy a few ingredients for the dishes we were contributing to the day - bbq'ed asparagus with a sherry bacon vinaigrette and grilled wild mushrooms wrapped in banana leaf with chilli and Thai basil. After some quick prep work it was onto the scooter and off to the other side of the island where the soiree was taking place.

After arriving at Glen and Kellys place and a quick drink we finished up our prep and awaited the arrival of the guest of honor...oh and Mike. Without warning it arrived, set on a long wooden plank and wrapped in butchers paper,

Mike's 33rd Birthday

we all so desperately wanted to peel back the paper and take a peek but without the birthday boy all we could do was wait and anticipate. You know the saying idle hands, well ours soon set to work with a marker turning present into card with a few budding artists amongst us adding some final flourishes.

Mike's 33rd Birthday

Mike's 33rd Birthday

Finally Mike arrives not only to our relief but also the trio of dogs who were patiently guarding the aromatic parcel sitting on the table.

With Mike here it was all on, first the unwrapping of the present, paper was torn away to first reveal a golden brown snout followed by two crispy ears and down a superbly crackalicious body to the curly tail.

Mike's 33rd Birthday

Fifteen kilos of perfectly roasted pig, yum! First cut is given to Mike before the savagery began.

Mike's 33rd Birthday

Asparagus and mushrooms were put onto the bbq followed by corn, twice baked potato's and deviled eggs prepared by the insanely energetic Vern, Jess and co as well as Kel's mad coleslaw and fresh bread rolls from down the road.

Mike's 33rd Birthday

The pig was amazing, the chef had deboned the beastie before rubbing the inside with Thai spices and then building a wooden frame to hold the shape as it roasted.

Mike's 33rd Birthday
Seriously we're starving here

There was much feasting and drinking, then games with more drinking and silly hats as well as some impromptu magic, some more drinking and then some drink fueled eating, a good time was had by all.

Half down, half to go.... and yes I ate that ear. Tasty

I hope it's a birthday you remember Mike, it was a pleasure to be part of it.

Asparagus with sherry bacon vinaigrette (adapted from webers book of grilling)

It's a pretty loose recipe. Make with quantities suited to your taste.

Take some bacon and dice fairly finely, saute over a med low heat so the fat renders out of the bacon, don't rush it and cook until the bacon is golden and crispy.

Strain the bacon and return the fat to the pan.

Add diced garlic to the fat and saute until golden, at the end of sauteing the garlic throw in some picked thyme leaves for a few seconds to release the flavor and aroma.

Strain the garlic and thyme and add to the bacon. Keep the fat.

Whisk the bacon fat into some sherry vinegar until you have a loose dressing add the fried bacon, garlic and thyme then season.

Pour over freshly grilled asparagus or broccoli rabe.

Mushrooms in banana leaf with chilli and Thai basil.

Another simple one. Again quantities to taste.

Take a sheet of banana leaf and quickly run over an open flame, you will see as the leaf changes shades of green. This makes the leaf pliable and more giving as it is folded.

Onto the leaf add a handful of mixed mushrooms, some crushed garlic cloves, roast chilli powder, sliced shallot, a good handful of Thai basil and a squeeze of lime.

Fold the leaf around the mushrooms and secure with a couple of toothpicks if your not quite up to the leaf folding you can then wrap the leaf wrapped mushrooms in a sheet of al foil, you'll still get the leaf aroma in the mushrooms.

Place the package on the grill and cook. Unwrap at the table to get the full spectrum aromas.

Grill master Doraemon.

Not wanting to waste our time in the sun, I mean after six months of snow we were transparent, the beach was the only thing on the schedule during the day for us. So it was left to the nights for time to find something tasty. Years age we used to go to a small stand on the side of the main road for really good som dtam and grilled chicken, looking for the same place again we found that the stand has expanded to now a full structure with real walls and everything.

The grilling has now been taken over by younger family members who have moved the grill stand across the road to make more room for the woks and such at the original place. They have squeezed into a small grassy space next to (uhggg) yet another girlie bar.

Kamala Beach

They only open one at a time, the wok side during the day and then the family migrates across the road to grill at night. The smell of the grilling meat as you walk past is intoxicating, you can almost taste the flavor. We had to have some.

Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach

First night grilled pork, grilled chicken, beef salad and salad of three crispies.

The pork, a huge chunk of goodness, soooooo good, carriying all the promised smokey flavor as well as the grill rendered fat.

Kamala Beach

The chicken was still as good as we remembered, crispy on the outside and soft and moist in, the light tumeric marinade giving it something else.

Kamala Beach

The beef salad was a real fire starter, packed with loads of chilli. Also apple eggplant, tomato and asian celery all coated with loads of limey dressing. Thai style salads tend to have a lot of dressing so you have some for your rice.

Kamala Beach

The three crispy salad, well thats what we read yum sam krop - salad, three, crispy, though we could and probably are mangling the language, was indeed a three crispy salad with deep fried pork skin, deep fried chicken and tiny school prawns along with cashews, shallots, tomato and asian celery all tossed with a slightly sweet, chilli dressing. First time for this one and wow it won't be the last. I mean spicy, sweet, sour and crunchy, it's got it all.

Kamala Beach

So full after trying to finish it all we rolled home only to be back a few days later, on this night the grill was manned by a two foot Doramon who was studiously grilling her packet of potato chips one by one around the cooking meat.

Kamala

Kamala

Kamala

Thinking we had learned our lesson about portion sizing the other night we only ordered three things, a tom yum, a white fungus salad and some sun dried pork.

The pork - Muu dat diaw - is more of a drinking snack but it's tasty any time, marinated in fish or soy sauce, coated in a varitey of spice and left to dry in the sun before being deep fried and served with chilli sauce. It's quite addictive.

Kamala Beach

White fungus salad was great, usually seen the dry but the fresh fungus had much more texture, and we learnt a new Thai word; Het huu nuu khao - white fungus.

Kamala

The soup was where we came undone. It was huge, easily enough for four, it must have had a whole school of prawns in the bowl. Really good but we just couldn't finish, sorry.

Kamala Beach

We came here once and there was a shack, we came back a few years later and its grown, what'll be here next time??? Just don't go changing the food!!
